Book Review: Tuesdays with Morrie
A reflection on Tuesdays with Morrie and what it has taught me as a young girl navigating life in her twenties
Hi everyone! I hope you’re all doing well. This blog post will be a little different than usual but I wanted to review a recent (and new favourite) read of mine, Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. If I would describe the book in three words it would be; moving, timeless and inspiring.
The book charts the end of Morrie Schwartz’s life. Although detrimental and harrowing, Morrie chooses to spend his Tuesdays with one of his favourite students Mitch and teaches him little nuggets of wisdom about love, life and all things in between. As a young girl navigating her twenties, this book was needed now more than ever for myself and I will be taking Morrie’s lessons forward in my life after reading this book.
‘Moving, timeless and inspiring’
Morrie teaches Mitch about everything in life and what he has learnt himself, but one thing about him has stood out to me since reading the book; his passion for life. For someone who has suffered with mental health issues, the book really felt like a pat on the back for what I have achieved despite this and the hardships that I have struggled through.
The layout of the book is one thing which really stood out to me, how it is set up like a classroom lesson, and I loved that so much. Morrie within himself has such a nostalgic touch and I found the book’s layout really complimented this. Nostalgia is a weird thing to come across but Morrie also teaches us that it is good to embrace all things past, present and future as whatever goes prepares us for the future ahead.
One quote which really stood out to me near halfway through the book was ‘Love wins, love always wins.’ I think more people should have this outlook on life as it truly changes you for the better. Despite Morrie’s experiences, and harrowing end of life circumstances, he still believed that love conquers all.
Another quote which I loved was ‘You live on- in the hearts of everyone you have touched and nurtured while you were here.’ which compliments this further, we may come and go from others’ lives but our love and light will always remain through their actions and words.
Overall, the book was a fantastic read. A clear five star read from me and I will definitely revisit the book when I can in the future. Thank you for being such a wise, wonderful source of light Morrie.
I absolutely fell in love with this book when it was given to me in high school. This is the first time I’ve ever seen anyone acknowledge it on an app like this and it makes me so happy. What a great read.
This is the second time this book has come up screaming “Bakhtawar just read me already, look the twenties girlies love it”, and I think I shall listen and add this to my ‘to be read’ 💚
